Company History
Max Zuest is the inventor of the original Zest Anchor Dental Attachment and founder of Zest Anchors, Inc. Max was born in Switzerland (source of the Swiss quality) and grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He was invited to start dental laboratory work by a dentist on his milk route as he worked his way through college. In 1943, following his wartime service in the Canadian Army Dental Corps, Max bought a small dental lab in Vancouver. Five years later he built the Star Rise, a 35 foot motor yacht that was completely outfitted with a dental operatory and laboratory. Leaving his Vancouver lab in the care of associates, Max cruised up and down the coast of British Columbia with a dentist friend for two years, performing dental services for logging camps and getting paid in cash.
In 1950, upon his return to Vancouver with his new bride Vivian, Max sold the Star Rise and the lab and they re-located to San Diego due to the health requirements of his Father John Paul Zuest. Soon after arrival in San Diego, Max started Zuest Dental Lab in the Hillcrest area of town. His father made deliveries on a bicycle, until it was stolen, and a Volkswagen bug took its place. Late in 1958 Jim Shiner joined Max as his partner for the growing Zuest Dental Lab. Together they built a full service laboratory with over 100 employees.
In 1972 Max came up with the idea for his own Zest Anchor dental attachment after using attachments imported from Europe with less than expected results. Max sold the Zest attachments from Zuest Dental Lab until the lab was purchased by a large corporation. Later in 1977 Max formed the Zest Anchors corporation to control the manufacturing and distribution of Zest Anchor attachments. He was then joined by his son Paul after graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in Biology. Max and Paul worked together in a small manufacturing facility in Kearny Mesa machining, packaging, and shipping Zest Anchor kits to fill the increasing numbers of orders.
The company moved to Escondido in 1990 where Max had a new building built as a permanent manufacturing facility for Zest Anchors, Inc. Later, son Paul let Max retire and took over the running of the company. In 1994, the Zest Anchor Advanced Generation (ZAAG) attachment was developed and patented. The ZAAG Attachment was produced to fit all major implant systems as well as root retained overdentures. Worldwide sales of this attachment helped Zest Anchors, Inc. to grow and prosper throughout the 90s.
With the introduction of the LOCATOR® Attachment System in 2001, Zest Anchors, Inc. has experienced tremendous growth in both size and worldwide recognition. Scott Mullaly and Paul Zuest worked together to develop and patent the LOCATOR® and are honored by the trust that a majority of implant companies sell our attachment products along with their implants.
The worldwide acceptance and success of the LOCATOR® has propelled our company to new levels of accomplishment and by creating exciting new products that are second to none, the continued success of Zest Anchors, Inc. is cemented in the philosophy of placing patient satisfaction above all else.
We are currently developing additional new innovative dental attachment products that will be available for the dental industry in the near future.
